Chhura's travels to Mawngping

Long long ago, in one of his long travels, Chhura came to a village whose inhabitants were abnormal in that they never passed any excreta. When, therefore, the inhabitants in this village saw one morning Chhura answering the call of nature, they were greatly surprised and asked him what he was doing.

Chhura replied, 'While I was a small baby, my mother made a small incicion in my buttock with a hot iron so that I could pass stool easily.'

Passing stool in the same way as Chhura did, was the desire of the people. The inhabitants of this village requested Chhura to perform a similar operations on their children. Chhura readily agreed to their proposal. Instructing them that they should only open the incisions on the third day, he left the village after performing such a dreadful operation on all the children.

The villagers duly obeyed Chhura's instruction. On the morning of the third day, they found that almost all their children had died except one. The only survivor, who could hardly move his hands was caught from every side by the mothers and subsequently he died too. They were very angry with Chhura and pursued him to take revenge.

Seeing them, Chhura hid inside a hollow log upon which his pursuers, on arrival, sat down to rest. They had given up hope of catching him and were about to return, when one of the youngmen said that if the log were Chhura's head, he would break it into pieces without showing any mercy.

Hearing this, Chhura was frightened and he shouted out from his hiding place, 'Please do not cut me'. He was then dragged out and taken to their village. Then Chhura said, 'There are so many of you; and each of you want to have a hold on me. But you cannot do for want of room. Why don't you start holding me from my elbow? then each of you can have a grip.' As they began to do so, Chhura broke loose the grip and fled as fast as he could.

So, another pursuit being inevitable it began and the villagers were about to overtake him again when Chhura climbed up a big banyan tree. His pursuers waited for him under the banyan tree. After waiting for a long time, his pursuers got tired and they decided to fell the banyan tree.

When it was about to fall, Chhura shouted to them from the top, 'Now you must be quite tired, wait till I climb down and I will help you in cutting the tree'. So they waited and Chhura came down. While it was being felled, he made good his escape once again.

His enemies did not give up their intention to capture him. Chhura evaded capture for a long time; but was at last taken. They bound him with ropes and put him inside a big basket, and hung it underneath a bridge over a turbulent river.

Now, Chhura had no more hope of escape, and had to resign himself to waiting for a slow death in his big basket. Fortunately for him, however, one day a Pawi traveller was passing along the bridge. Chhura shouted out to him saying, 'Pawi-a, Please come and help me out of this predicament or else I shall kill you with this knife.' The Pawi traveller was afraid of him when he showed a little portion of his half cut steel instrument. He came and let him out of the cage. Then Chhura said to him, 'Would you like to try how pleasant it is to be in that basket?'

The Pawi traveller sportingly replied in the affirmative, and Chhura put him inside the cage and suspended him in exactly the same way as his enemies had done over the bridge and left him to die.

He then came to his senses and climbed up the tree again and cut the main string of the basket and the basket along with the Pawi traveller fell into the turbulent river. The traveller could not utter another word.

Luckily, that pawi traveller happened to be a rich merchant. Chhura took all his merchandise and returned to the village of his enemies who had caught him and left him in tha basket to die.

The villagers were greatly surprised and they asked him how he escaped in the first place and then come by all those valuable goods.

Chhura replied, 'After you had left me, I tied a cooking pot round my waist and dived into the water. I found the bottom full of wealth and I collected the best of them. The river-bed must be so heavy that the wealth and I collected the best of them. The river-bed is still fulll of valuable goods. Go quickly and you too can become rich.'

All the men of the village accordingly proceeded to the river and did as advised by Chhura. As a result, all of them perished. When they did not return and their wives enquired of him, Chhura told them that the wealth they had collected from the river-bed must be so heavy that they were delayed on the way.

Immediately, therefore, the wives went out to meet their husbands. As soon as they left the village, Chhura extinguished the fire in all the houses.

After a time, they returned deeply grieved at the loss of their husbands. When they wanted to cook food, they found that there was no fire in any of the houses, and they had to ask for Chhura's assistance. In return, Chhura sold fire at the various prices he demanded.

Thus Chhura made himself a very rich man and he later became the king an married the best among the widows and young girls of that village.
